Efficient Framework for Analyzing Coverage Expansion with Capacity Improvement Using Mobile Relay

Cellular systems have significantly evolved over the past decades with the emergence of new and efficient radio access technologies, and the implementation of advanced techniques to support the increased network capacity and the high data rates demanded by novel applications. This paper presents a quantitative study of the benefits that mobile relays can provide to the wireless infrastructure – namely, extension of base station coverage and enhancement of wireless connection throughput. However, a crucial challenge in implementing cooperation protocols is how to select relay-source pairs. For an end user within the coverage area, the maximum and average throughput gains that can be achieved using mobile relays are derived. These results provide insight into the benefits mobile relays can offer in terms of improving connectivity or throughput.
